Health & Safety Starts At Recruitment

Good health and safety practices don’t just protect employees; they also create an environment which cultivates economic success. Many of our manufacturing & processing clients view Health & Safety as a potent differentiator which strengthens their culture, reduces downtime & cuts labour costs through fewer accidents as well as reduces their ACC levies.

It makes sense to hire someone who takes health and safety seriously but asking them a couple questions about their commitment to health and safety during an interview isn’t going to provide you with reliable information in which to base your selection decision.

One of the best ways to know for sure whether a job candidate has a safety mindset is to assess them against specific measures that underpin safe behavior in the workplace.

Seeing that you regularly recruit for and place candidates in manufacturing/processing roles, we thought you’d appreciate an update on an assessment that can do just that – identify candidates who are likely to work conscientiously, be open to training and instructions and have the necessary personality traits and aptitude which support safe behaviour in the workplace.

Our Health and Safety Indicator assessment is a cost-effective tool which combines targeted personality and ability measures into one assessment and allows for the identification of safety conscious candidates.

It also helps to distinguish potential training & development needs and incorporates interview questions to help you further explore any potential areas of concern highlighted in the report.

The assessment covers an individual’s capacity to listen, comprehend and adhere to health and safety rules, their ability to perceive workplace hazards within their environments and their ability to respond to hazards based on their health and safety understanding.

Specific measures include:

  • Understanding instructions
  • Checking and attention to detail
  • Understanding the safety environment
  • Safety motivation
  • Safety diligence
  • Adherence to rules
  • Openness to guidance
  • Safety confidence
  • Safety composure

Instead of administering a Personality Questionnaire and Industrial Proficiency Test for your candidates, we suggest you take a look at the HSI assessment which blends these two assessments together and adds a H&S component – for half the price.

Take a look at the HSI sample report and give us a call on 0508 736 753 if you have any questions or would like to discuss how to transition to this new assessment.
